Quotes, sayings/expressions and advice – they all just seem to fit in nicely together with each other eh?
“It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations.”
― Winston Churchill (Click the name for a list of quotes)
“I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.”
― Marlene Dietrich (Click the name)
What I love about them is the fact that they’re remembered and recorded… They’re part of our history too!
“There is nothing more admirable than when two people who see eye to eye keep house as man and wife, confounding their enemies and delighting their friends.“
- Homer, The Odyssey (Click the name)
I find the origin of quotes and sayings very interesting too, whether they come from a movie, book, music, poetry, stranger or your aunty after she’s had a few wines… (oh my).
If you think about it, quotes can be super educational as well, depending on the source of course. There’s actually a pretty educational quote on education itself!
“A colleague said to me one time, “They don’t pay me to like the kids. They pay me to teach a lesson. The kids should learn it. I should teach it. They should learn it. Case closed.”
Well, I said to her, “You know, kids don’t learn from people they don’t like.”
She said, “That’s just a bunch of hooey.”
And I said to her, “Well, your year is going to be long and arduous, dear.”
Needless to say it was. Some people think that you can either have it in you to build a relationship or you don’t. I think Stephen Covey had the right idea. He said you ought to just throw in a few simple things, like seeking first to understand as opposed to being understood, simple things like apologizing. You ever thought about that? Tell a kid you’re sorry, they’re in shock.” – Rita Pierson
It’s also especially enjoyable spending time with people remembering movie quotes. They seem to create joy and laughter and they’re fantastic for making good conversation.
Oh and, of course, quotes and sayings are great to use when you don’t have words of your own. This goes without saying, but it’s true so I’ve said it! ;)
I know I’ve used this advice from my mother for myself and passed it on to friends if they feel like they’re backtracking:
“Sometimes you have to take two steps back to take a step forward, but at least you’re getting there!” – Mum.
They’re great icebreakers too. Often you’ll notice someone opening a speech with a quote, purposefully placed there to make their audience laugh. A great technique.
Sometimes, you can use quotes to your advantage and even creep people out. I absolutely love that you can freak someone out with a quote from a thriller and horror flicks. All you need is one! Hee hee hee…
“Here’s Johnny!” - The Shining
Need something to get you thinking? Here’s one for the journo’s…
“What is the essence of journalism if it doesn’t benefit society?” – Anas Aremeyaw Anas
Got a creative spirit and need some inspiration? Well there’s quotes for that, too…
“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” -Ira Glass
Oh and don’t forget the quotes you own yourself… Maybe you’ve got some personal jokes containing only one word that, when quoted, will get you and your mates rolling in laughter at the memory. Or maybe you’ve written down some pretty great poetry or song lyrics and possibly given some advice to someone that you found works for you too. It does feel pretty great knowing I’ve got some original quotes up my sleeve (though most are just nonsense).
“It is, is it? … Is it, it is?” – Me.
Oh yes, quotes are very much-so AWESOME.
